    1. This collection begins strong with stories and authors that qualify as classics and Noir. But the quality of the stories and the authors quickly descends and never recovers. This is the only book I have purchased in this series and I promise I will not be back for more.

    2. Some really powerful stories here.Among my favorites are:Marcia Muller's story that finds her sleuth trying to figure out the story of a potential suicide, which quickly becomes a murder; Bill Prozini's poignant story of a man who finally can't take it anymore and shoots up his neighborhood, Dasheill Hammet's (in the first story I've ever read by him) story about a rash of mysterious suicides and the disappearance of two sister's, Janet Dawson's story of two street children struggling to survive [...]

    4. Abandoned. Each story I started just didn't grab me. At one point I had forgotten that I read the Ambrose Bierce - obviously more reflection of my state of mind than of the author's talent. Sometimes you're just not in the mood. This is the only Noir book (to date) that I've returned relatively unread. So I said to the book as I returned it to the library: Really, it's me - not you. Do you think it will forgive me?DD@Phila

    5. There are some really fantastic short stories in here. For the most part, I liked the older more mystery-like stories by Hammett, Twain and the like, but there are some intriguing newer ones, too. Some very nice SF details integrated into the descriptions- very satisfying if you love the city by the bay!

    6. This volume wanders a bit, including stories that to my mind don't qualify as noir. SF Noir 1 was noir-ier.

    8. The LA Noir 2 book was better in my opinion, but this one still had some great short stories. Jack London's was tied with Dashiell Hammett's story for the best.
