    1. I'm still trying to find words why I don't like this book I adore Falcones, I discovered him for Balkans, sold rights in three other countries because I fell in love with his first book after reading only 30 pages of sample translation in English As editor, one of the acqusitions I am most proud of The second novel was good too, I read it with pleasure But this third one, it left me untouched Without any emotion The language is standard Falcones, descriptions are there too, but something is miss [...]

    3. Caridad is an African slave, forced to work on a tobacco plantation in Cuba for many years. She is unexpectedly freed when her master dies while she is accompanying him to Spain, but 'freedom,' it turns out, is relative, when she is dumped onto a foreign shore, penniless and ill-equipped to survive. By pure luck, she is, after some horrible misadventures, taken in by the gypsy community. She forms a bond with the man who takes her in, Melchor, and becomes fast friends with his granddaughter, Mil [...]

    6. How are we going to insist on their freedom if we can’t even claim what belongs to us? The Barefoot Queen is the story of Caridad and Milagros, two different woman who meet by chance and tragedy in 1979 in Seville, Spain. Caridad is a freed African slave who is sent to Spain as a free woman. However, due to a lifetime of enslavement,  she is clueless and alone is preyed upon by the wicked who roam the street of Seville.Milagros Carmona Vega grew up with her proud Gypsy family ( I don’t me [...]

    7. I don't normally do this. But I've spent four days reading a 700-some? page book and only made it to 30%. It's stellar writing and an interesting historical tale of the life of the Gypsies and their persecution and customs in the late 1700s, Spain. The tale follows not only an apparently incredibly, mind-blowingly gorgeous Gypsy girl, Milagros, but also a former Cuban slave, Caridad--who also inspires men to wild lust as soon as they lay their eyes on her. (Yes, I have a disembodied part in that [...]

    9. An enormous letdown after the author's wonderful Cathedral of the Sea! This did paint a good picture of gypsy life in Spain in the 18th century and the prejudice the gypsies faced. I could see the supposed beginnings of flamenco through the song and dance of two friends, the gypsy Milagros and the black freed slave from the West Indies, Caridad. I persisted 300+ pages but the details of violence towards women, sexual abuse, and sheer length packed with tiny details finally turned me off. The aut [...]

    10. Fantastic! EXPLOSIVE! Stunning!! I never wanted this powerfully moving, historical tale of gypsy tradition and struggle to end. Absolutely LOVED The Barefoot Queen!! Ildefonso Falcones is a brilliant storyteller and this beautiful story is most definitely one of the BEST books I've ever read. Seriously! Falcones has enlightened me about the Triana gypsy society that fought constant discrimination, racial injustice, capture, and enslavement during the religious fervor of the Spanish Inquisition.I [...]

    12. Having very much enjoyed Falcones’ earlier novel Cathedral of the Sea, I was disappointed to find that I really couldn't get through this one. The subject matter has great potential for an enjoyable and compelling read, but the author just hasn’t managed to carry it off. The story starts when a former Cuban slave arrives in Seville and ends up being welcomed into the local gypsy community. But this is not a good time for gypsies in Spain and soon after their persecution starts with a massive [...]

    14. The story starts with ex-slave Caridad arriving in Cadiz, from Cuba. Alone and not knowing a soul in a foreign country, she is directed to Sevilla where she may get religious help. But things in Sevilla don't turn out rhe way she hopes, and Caridad ends up in the hands of a devious man of takes advantage of her and her position, and turns her into a prostutite. Caridad soon becomes ill and only then is set free. Feverish and praying to her gods, the orishas, she wanders through town until she is [...]

Somehow, I still haven't his first book I remember translated, but I really had high hopes for this one.Caridad, a Cuban slave freed on the death bed of her master, arrives now in Spain without a goal, without any means or money and without any knowledge of life outside tobacco plantations. 17.

    20. Falcones definitivamente nunca me decepciona…

    21. The year is 1748 and the time is bad, very bad for women everywhere. Caridad is a former slave who accompanies her master to Sevilla in Spain from Cuba. En route he dies and fortunately gives the girl her freedom. A freedom she knows nothing about. She has no idea how to live as a "free" person. She does not even consider herself as a person. Not even a chattel. She does not consider that she is worth anything - an animal in her opinion is worth more than her. This story is about Caridad and how [...]

    23. Set in the backdrop of 18th Century Spain, Falcones paints a picture of two strong women, determined to live their lives as they see fit. More importantly, live them freely. Caridad is an African/Cuban slave, who has found herself free after her master dies unexpectedly on journey to Spain. This should be a joyous occurrence, that she is free. That, however, is not the case as she is left in a foreign country, without the means to survive. Taunted and mocked at by the local men, Caridad is not s [...]
