    1. This is an excellent history of the Civil War written by one of the premier participants in the Army of North Virginia. 4. If Douglas Southall Freeman says MEMOIRS is " the most valuable single commentary on the operations of the Army of Northern Virginia", what else really needs to be said? The book is clear and offers strong opinions on events relating to the battles and operations of the Army Of Northern Virginia. It is complete and does not hold back when criticism is due. It is a must for any student of the Civil War.
