    1. It's a history textbook. It is a good book, but it is still a textbook. That makes it not that much of a page-turner. Seriously though, it does its job well. The careful reader will learn a LOT and see how various factors and events weave together to make the tapestry that is the history of imperialist era Russia.

    2. An excellent reader, with well-written essays and well-selected documents, all grouped around useful themes. My only complaint would be that the length of the chapters makes them tough to use given my class format and schedule. Still, that challenge is well worth working around.
